In this age of factory production lines and imports from the Far East, it is reassuring to know that cyclists around the world can still choose a cycle hand-built in Derby by Mercian Cycles.

As many other cycle frames manufactured today are often scrapped after a relatively short period of time, Mercians from even the 1950's are being renovated in Derby and returned to their delighted owners looking as-good-as-new.

Here at Mercian Cycles we hand-build and finish frames in our Derby workshop. We continue to use the traditional methods to create frames that are recognised for the quality of workmanship, accuracy of construction and beautiful long lasting finish.

Just as you may prefer a tailor-made suit to an off-the-peg garment, you can have your frame and cycle built specifically for you. The perfect size and fit ensures optimum comfort and power output when riding, whether you are cycling on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the countryside or cycling Lands End to John O'Groats.

We are all individuals - with different torso length, shoe size, length of arms and legs - so why should we all squeeze ourselves onto ill-fitting machines? The beauty of a custom built frame is that it is built to suit you.

Tubing

Mercian frames have been constructed using Reynolds double butted tubing since 1946, giving us vast knowledge and experience in the properties and qualities of the tubesets.

Reynolds closed production of 531 and 653 tubing over recent years. 531 has been replaced by 631 butted tubing, the stronger equivalent of it's predecessor. Our friends at Reynolds tell us that 631 tubing with 525/725 stays are upgrades on 531. These are now the standard tubing options used in our frame range.

653 has been replaced with 725 chrome-moly butted tube sets.

At the time of writing this website we are in the fortunate position of having stocks of 531 and a small stock of 653 tubing still available (while stocks last). Please specify your choice.

531 tubing is the same price as 631 tubing.
653 tubing can be added to your frame order at a cost of £100.00 + VAT.

Standard frame specifications:

All Mercian frames have the following braze ons included in the frame price:

• Campagnolo lever bosses
• Tunnels under bottom bracket
• Stop under chainstay
• 3 guides on top tube for full covered cable or stop/guides for bare cable. (Positioned to your preference)
• 1 set bottle bosses on down tube
• Mudguard eyes front and rear if needed

Complete cycle packages also include an additional set of bottle bosses on the frame and rear rack eyes as standard if required.

Vertical ends can be fitted to any frame at £25.50 + VAT.

Upstand on head tube is available on all frames at a cost of £32.00 + VAT.

Reynolds extra long tubeset for frames from 26 ½ “ to 30” can be used on the King of Mercia, Professional and Vincitore models at £50.00 + VAT.

Investment cast lugs (short and long point), cast bottom bracket shells and cast fork crowns are available at extra cost: lugs £19.00, bottom bracket shell £19.00 + VAT, crown £19.00 + VAT.

Mercian gothic transfers or Mercian block transfers are available in white, red, gold, black, silver, yellow or blue – all edged in black, except black, which is edged in gold. On your new frame order or renovation, please specify which type and colour of transfer you would like.

We can fit a headset of your choice to any model.

Your Mercian frame will be built to suit you, so our frame information is a guideline only. Talk to us if you wish to discuss your specification and the possibilities available to you.

Most of our frame models can be built as a track model if you desire.
